Second life for mineral wool offcuts
In the past, the mineral wool offcuts from the production of thermally insulated doors, for example, were thrown away. Today, we give it a second life: as blown-in insulation or insulation for chimney pipes. And without using any additional energy.
But our sustainability strategy goes even further. Background: In recycling and reuse processes, the focus is often only on the new use of the material. However, there are often challenges in other process steps - here, for example, in logistics: the offcuts are voluminous and only a small amount of them fit on a truck - transporting them would cause high CO2 emissions. Our solution: optimized logistics! In a first step, we increased the transport weight from 2.9 to 4.26 tons by using self-pressing containers. This means fewer journeys are necessary. But we have invested further to optimize logistics: In a new hall, a channel baling press now ensures optimum compression of the mineral wool. The result: up to 85 percent fewer transports - with up to 19.8 tons per truck.
Plants that only produce a small amount of mineral wool waste collect it in BigPacks and transport it back to the supplier. The supplier takes care of recycling and the material remains in the cycle as a raw material.
